Matthew’s mouth fell open, and he stared at the woman. Her overly flirtatious behavior was enough of a put off in itself. But now, she was so forward as to ask him to dance. Anyone raised in high society in London knew that it was highly inappropriate for a young lady to ask for a dance. Yet, Lady Ingrid was acting not only as though it was nothing out of the ordinary, but as though she was doing Matthew a favor by allowing him such an honor.

Over her shoulder, Matthew could see a few couples walking by the open balcony door, staring at the unchaperoned couple with curious, disapproving looks. Matthew clenched his jaw, angry at the improper position in which he now found himself because of this distastefully forward woman. He gave a sheepish nod to the people who were looking at them and took a long, deliberate step backward, away from Lady Ingrid.
